Araçatiba and Itapuca are villages located within the Guaratiba Mangrove Natural Reserve, a crucial area for the ecosystem of Rio de Janeiro, but at the same time extremely vulnerable from an environmental standpoint. The local community, consisting of about 5,000 inhabitants, is primarily made up of fishermen and farmers who face precarious working and living conditions, struggling to rise above the poverty line. Additionally, the villages grapple with severe infrastructural deficiencies, including difficult access to water and the lack of an adequate sewage system.
In the villages of Araçatiba and Itapuca, there are no state or local organizations that offer educational support or tutoring, nor are there recreational centers for children and teenagers, such as libraries, sports facilities, or meeting places. The only available public area, the square, is neglected and partially unusable.
The lack of kindergartens or schools for children aged 1 to 6 forces young mothers to dedicate themselves exclusively to childcare, depriving them of opportunities for work or study. This leads to a significant dropout rate, especially among teenage girls who become mothers as early as 13, compelled to leave school to take care of their families. Young teenage boys face a similar situation, having to enter the workforce early to support their children financially, often accepting precarious and poorly paid jobs, without being able to read and write.
To address the lack of education and instruction in the villages, We Edu Care inaugurated an educational center in January 2024. The center aims to provide educational opportunities for 160 children and 20 teenagers and young adults through two main projects: ensuring access to education for everyone and promoting female empowerment.
We are reaching out to you because with your contribution, you can help us in this mission!
We need to raise 5,000 euros to cover the annual salary of a teacher, an essential figure not only to help children, teenagers, and young adults overcome educational gaps but also to stimulate their curiosity, inspire them to dream big, and motivate them by giving them greater self-esteem.
Your contribution, whatever the amount, is crucial to give these children the chance to have a better future and even the ability to dream and envision a life different from the survival-based existence in the villages where they have grown up. Knowledge nourishes their minds—let's nourish minds to create a future TOGETHER!
"We Edu Care" ODV was founded in 2010 with the goal of promoting social and environmental development in Africa and Latin America, focusing on three fundamental pillars: female empowerment, environmental protection, and education. Since then, the association has extended its reach to three countries—Tanzania, Brazil, and Burkina Faso—reaching over 5,000 children and their families.
To reduce illiteracy and school dropout rates and to support the multidimensional education of children and teenagers, ensuring they have access to higher education and become aware adults. We aim to protect children from psychological and physical abuse through monitoring their emotional well-being.
- School support and literacy programs
- Extracurricular activities focused on gender equality and civic education through artistic and recreational workshops
- Assistance for children and teenagers in cases of abuse and early pregnancies
